The Terminator particle

Large Hadron collider

The Large Hadron Collider has failed to work so far.  Some people blame it on a faulty design.  Some people blame it on shoddy construction.  Some people blame it on the fact a black hole will destroy whatever it is used to make one.  Now, people are blaming it on particles from the future traveling back in time to destroy the LHC because it hates, and I mean really hates, Higgs bosons.  Now, Higgs bosons are often referred to “God particles”, in that they sorta explain everything in one neat little package.  So these particles from the future should be called Terminator particles.  Now, where all this gets real good is if they do figure out how the stop the Terminator particles and get the LHC to actually work and generate the actual “God particle”, this will occur in December, 2012.

This is better than anything in the movie.

Tomorrow the end of the world, again?

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Depending on who you ask, today may be the last day of your lifeas you know it.  Tomorrow, the CERN collider fires up for the first time.  Some are contending this will create black holes that will suck all matter on Earth into a void in space.

Myself, I’m not too worried.  Besides, they won’t even be colliding atoms and such any time real soon.  We probably won’t even know when they do.  And, we won’t even know once they have.  It’ll take a while to figure out what happened.

Additionally, I don’t think black holes in space start with two atoms colliding at a high speed.  The proportions in space are wildly greater than our perception allows on Earth.  In space, billions and billions and billions of atoms will start spinning due to some gravitational pull that eventually gets them all spinning so fast and colliding in on themselves with such force that matter can’t survive.

That’ a whole lot different than two atoms bumping into each other.

While we are waiting for the world to end, again, I suggest spending the time by enjoying the Cern Rap a few more times!

Yet another end of the world asteroid ( or just the same one again )?

Well, not quite:

Asteroid heads for Earth, Russian astronomer claims from PhysOrg.com

An asteroid discovered three years ago could be a threat in 2029 when it crosses Earth’s orbit, a Russian astronomer said Monday.

2029.  Where have I heard that before?  Oh yeah, I wrote about this over two years ago…..

The call to action stems from an orbiting hunk of stone that for a few days around Christmas had scientists on the edges of their seats. The asteroid, named 2004 MN4, was found last year. It orbits the Sun but crosses the path of Earth. In December, preliminary observations showed it might strike in 2029, according to NASA scientists. It briefly had the highest odds ever assigned to a possible collision. Further investigation ruled out the 2029 impact scenario, but scientists cannot yet rule out an impact in 2036.

Could this possibly be the same asteroid, or has this Russian suddenly discovered something already known?  Well, according to NASA’s Near Earth Object Program, Apophis and 2004 MN4 are one and the same.  So, what is the point of this article?  Although Boris Shustov’s statements may have been made yesterday, the story is old.  Scientists have already stated it would be fairly catastrophic, and have already come to the conclusion it won’t hit the Earth in 2029.

But, it might in 2036.

But that’s not what Shustov is saying now.  But that IS what the media is reporting.

Bad, bad, Shustov.  Even badder media.  Fact check just for once.  Please.

This is too cool! Someone has rendered what it would look like if a HUGE meteor struck the Earth:
