For my birthday, all I want are some Aurigids
Aug 9th, 2007 by Moonage
I had the very fortunate luck to have been born on Labor Day weekend. Because of that, there are some things I usually prefer to do on my birthday. About the only thing I’ll add to that is they don’t involve children. This year, things were looking kind of bleak as a dear friend of ours decided to get married, of all the days of the year, on my birthday. Good for them, not so good for me. We have been recovering from having a kid for the last four birthdays, so I have been getting a little antsy and feel the need to re-discover my youth, and other things. However, I have just learned all is not lost, the Aurigids will be in town on my birthday! However, it will be a challenge. From what I can tell, in my neck of the woods, they won’t be showering until about 6am. I’m not sure I’ll be able to make it that long.
But it does give me something to shoot for!
Now, this sounds SOOOOO Moon I can’t stand it. The Aurigids made their debut in pretty much the year 0. The Romans witnessed Comet Keiss blowing off some dust as it approached the sun. Keiss didn’t hang around too long, but the dust has pretty much been left in limbo. Every so often, Earth passes through that dust. It’s happened three times in the last 100 years or so. It won’t happen again in our natural lifetimes.
So, whether I have the blowout bash of the century or sit at home twiddling my thumbs, this birthday will have a place in history!
( Oh yeah, another Perseid shower will come a little sooner, like this weekend. I bet the Shuttle crew will get one heck of a view looking down on it all. )
