How much do I hate DVD’s?

Let’s say, very much.

Now, DVD’s are ok for your average 30 year old who values what’s on the DVD and can take care of them. However, DVD’s are custom made for small kids in a van. Pop a movie in the DVD player and the otherwise rowdy kid suddenly becomes occupied and enjoys the ride so much he won’t even get out of the van when he’s supposed to. Now, that part is awesome when it works. The problem is you get a hairline scratch on a DVD and it’s pretty much toast. When that movie that has turned my rowdy kid into a perfect angel suddenly hangs, distorts, or otherwise fails to function, the little angel turns into a raging monster scarier than anything Steven King could ever dream up. What aggravates me is that DVD’s are marketed to kids ( and parents thereof ), but are so very, very fragile. No small kid is going to remember to hold the DVD by the outside of the disc. Kids handle them like kids do, which devastates any DVD. I’m sure this great for the marketers of DVD’s, but it’s a pain in the ass for the parents.

Memory chips are becoming more and more powerful, when are they going to start marketing movies on a chip? I actually see movies on demand via 4G passing up the chip, but I think a lot of people will want to collect movies for another generation or two. So, let’s all ban DVD’s until they come out with something more reliable like USB movies or something?

Trust me, every parent in the universe is waiting for something like this. The death of DVD’s can’t come soon enough for me.

I read somewhere that Sirius Sat Radio is going to start offering children’s programming via Satellite directly into vehicles… Sure it’s not “on demand”, but it could still keep the little ones occupied.

      Cool stuff.

XM just started a kid’s channel ( 116 ). I have been testing it out on the kid. He seems ambivalent about it so far. It’s the video stuff that keeps him occupied.

What I really need is Wimax on demand movies and a player with about 300g hard drive space :)
