Modern Miracles - Amilia Taylor
Feb 20th, 2007 by Moonage
This is one hell of a survival story:

Amilia Taylor was born at 22 weeks. She clocked in at 10 OUNCES, and about 9.5 inches. Doctors are saying she should be able to go home tomorrow and should expect a semi-normal life.
The word I would use to describe this little girl I’d prefer not to use here. Amazing is not even an adequate word. I get the feeling Amilia’s going to kick some major butt in the real world.

You may be right but I have the feeling the truth may be just the opposite. I get the feeling she will need medical attention of some kind for the remainder of her life. This will result in hundreds of thousands of dollars being spent by the parents and by insurance companies. As cold as it sounds, it probably would have been better to let her die and have the parents try again.
I really don’t question people’s call in that regard. I was born with a genetic defect that has required some medical attention and could possibly end my life prematurely or cause some serious medical issues when or if it does it’s natural thing. I’d hate it if my parents had decided to go the easy route. My boy probably would have hated it just as much. With premies, you really don’t know what you’re getting until much later, so it’s a crap-shoot call whether to bail out or not. And, I do know from experience that aborting can leave lasting issues that could be more harmful to the parents than fighting FOR something. So, I’ll leave this call to the parents and just wish them the best. The baby’s doctors seem to think she has a chance at a semi-normal life, I have no experience or desire to question their judgment.
Just to clarify: the baby’s physicians have stated she is healthy and do not forsee any long-term health problems. I think semi-normal makes it sound like there’s something wrong with her. Unless I’ve missed an article, I’ve only heard positive prognosis about her health.
Let me add that I am very happy to see you post on this amazing story. Thanks for helping spread good news!
The last I heard, they really can’t say what health conditions she may or may not have in the foreseeable future, but everything looks good so far. If the worst case scenario is she is semi-normal, given the circumstances, she’s a living miracle.
