Chevy Volt

Ever get curious as to what the future transportation’s going to look like?  I mean, not necessarily the over-the-top concept stuff, but just what we’ll be driving to and from work?  Well, if Chevrolet has their way, it’ll look something like this:

That’s their latest hybrid.  It runs on electricity unless it’s running out, then switches to gasoline if it needs to.  According to Chevrolet, it’ll go about 40 miles without needing to hit the gasoline engine at all.  Being as I drive about 5 to work, max, I could possibly go weeks without hitting the petrol at all.  Pretty dang cool.  Not only that, but it looks a lot cooler than my 2001 Town and Country.  I’m waiting.  Make it cheap and I’m all over it!

Your last comment is the most important. Make it cheap. What good is spending 30 or 40 grand on a ‘green’ car? Sure if the only goal is to not use gasoline then it would be worth it. For many the goal is to not spend as much on gasoline on a daily basis. With that goal it doesnt make sense to take the savings from not buying as much gas and put it into car payments. Personally, I will buy a ‘green’ car when they cost the same as the non-green models.

Your sentiment is exactly my argument that over-reacting to global warming is not necessary and won’t acheive anything tangible UNTIL there are economic incentives behind it for the average consumer. When green cars become economically viable to the average Joe, carbon emissions will correct themselves. If gas is $10 a gallon, then 30 to 40 grand for a green car sounds a lot better. If gas stays at $2-$4, they better make green cars cheap for the time being. It doesn’t matter how much pressure Al Gore puts on Chevrolet to crank out green cars. If we ain’t buying, they won’t make them. Or, they’ll sit in lots while we buy cars made in Korea. So, that Volt looks good enough for me to drive, and I’m sure Al Gore loves it. But, it better be reasonably priced if it’s ever going to save the first gallon of gas.
