They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them

"They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them"

For some reason, this passage from the Bible means a lot to some people.  SOME people have construed this to mean you should take up a DEADLY serpent, and it won’t bite you.  Here’s the result, seven people have died from snake bite wounds suffered at church in Kentucky alone since 1980.  The seventh was yesterday.  What is it about the other six that convinced the seventh that handling dangerous wild animals was totally dependent on faith?  Fact is, they’re wild dangerous animals that are not affected by religion.  And, if you make them nervous, they’ll bite.  Period.  There are several different ways you can translate that passage, the one that is obviously wrong is interpreting it to mean you should pick up wild dangerous animals that bite and kill.  The state of Kentucky banned handling snakes about 20 years ago because of a rash of very dumb people getting killed handling dangerous snakes in church.  However, the fine is absolutely no more than $100.  What I think needs to happen is the state needs to figure out who it was that encouraged this lady to kill herself handling snakes that God made venomous and charge them with contributing to her death.  Then, just maybe, people will get the message that handling snakes is not only stupid, but has consequences for everyone involved.  As it is, she’s dead, and her congregation will most likely come to the conclusion her lack of faith contributed to it, and do it again.  If the person that encouraged the practice is in prison for a bit, then maybe the people smart enough to know that God gave serpents venom for a reason will prevail and all the rest will be safe.
