STS-116 set to go!

Shuttle flight STS-116 is set to launch December 7, 2006.  I LOVE Shuttle launches.  This one will be a night launch at 9:35 pm.  I don’t like night launches as much as you really can’t see much after they leave the pad.  However, any launch, when successful, is thrilling to me.
God speed 116!

The Dawn of Religion?

It had commonly been believed that rituals, ie religion, dated back about 40,000.  However, a new discovery is pushing it back a bit:
….inside a cave in remote hills in Kalahari Desert of Botswana, archeologists found the stone snake [image] that was carved long ago. It is as tall as a man and 20 feet long.
“You [...]

the fear of water vapor

See those pretty little streaks of clouds in that pic?  Those are called contrails.  Whispery little fragile streaks of ice left behind by jets and rockets that blow away in a very short period of time.  There is some debate as to how they affect the Earth’s climate since they reflect sunlight.  But, that point [...]

The Inner Life of a Cell

I don’t know how accurate this is, but it’s just plain cool to watch.  It’s hard to imagine that this is even remotely “real”, that all this action occurs in every single cell of not only my body, but every single living organism in the universe.  Pretty profound to think about, huh?

Miss the Leonids?

Miss the Leonids?  I did.  As per the norm, it was overcast here.  However, the Bad Astronomer found an excellent video of the event.  However, you had to download it to watch it.  Seemed rather slow so I put it on my vsocial server.  Seems a lot more enjoyable this way.  Enjoy.

Every now and then I learn something that actually makes a lot of sense.  Check this out:
….In order to explore really stupid behavior, they have asked what seem to be really stupid questions: Is it a good thing to set your hair on fire? Drink Drano? Go swimming where sharks swim?
The results are fascinating, and [...]

Global Orgasm for Peace

OK, first I started to put this on the Political blog.  Then, after reading it closer, decided to put it under this blog under psychology ( as in nuts ).  Then decided it’s kinda paranormal. so I’ll put it there.  Regardless, here’s the plan:
The mission of the Global Orgasm is to effect change in the [...]

Protect your heart, eat chocolate!

For about 20 years, I’ve been kinda hypoglycemic.  I showed all the classic symptoms.  However, it took a doctor to explain to me what it was.  The one symptom that really was kind of fun to play with was I could get literally high as a kite if I ate chocolate.  It didn’t last long, [...]

SOME people constantly badgered the Bush led Republicans as being bad for science in general.  So, I imagine they were quite relieved when the Democrats took the house a week ago.  Here’s a little look at what NASA can expect to deal with now that those people who hated Bush got their way:

Regarding funding, Representative [...]

Allergic to sex?

This sounds just plain awful to me:
Semen allergy symptoms can include itching, burning and swelling in the genitals. In the most severe cases, hives or swelling might appear elsewhere on the body and the woman might experience difficulty breathing.
"Typically symptoms occur within 30 minutes of intercourse, but in rare cases it may be hours or [...]
