Connecting the dots ( Lyman alpha blobs )

Now, I’m no astronomer by any stretch of the imagination. But, some things I see just confound the life out of me. For instance, how do you take a picture that looks like this:

Then come to the conclusion it actually looks something like this:

Which then means:
Newfound blob is biggest thing in universe
Structure is 200 million light-years wide, made up of galaxies and gas
Now, I’m sure they’re privy to a lot of info I wouldn’t understand. But it sure just looks like a bunch of galaxies to me.
